The Dirty Little Secret Deluxe by Catalinbread is probably the best Marshall amp-in-a-box pedal I’ve ever tried. The response and feel is so three-dimensional and amp-like, it’s hard to believe it’s a pedal. I love how the DLS Deluxe gets quite brash and aggressive but never harsh or fizzy. There is a chewiness to how it saturates that is just so satisfying. The all-discrete circuit runs preamp, phase inverter, power amp simulation, and output transformer sim all in series, and that full chain is why it responds so differently from most overdrives.
Reading left to right across the top row: Master, Preamp, Presence, Treble, Middle, and Bass. Master is the output level and sits before the phase inverter and transformer stages, so it shapes the feel, not just the volume. Preamp is the main gain control. Presence is a low-pass filter that attenuates frequencies above roughly 1.6kHz, so rolling it back darkens the top end rather than cutting a mid frequency. Treble, Middle, and Bass are classic Marshall tone stack values.
In the lower row, the Boost knob sets the boost level, and the SB/SL toggle (lower right) selects Super Bass or Super Lead mode. Super Lead tips the voice toward cutting upper-midrange; Super Bass shifts the emphasis lower for more low-end weight.
In the demo above I’ve set up sweep presets for Preamp, Presence, Treble, Middle, Bass, Boost, and the Super Bass / Super Lead toggle, so you can hear what each control does to the same riff.
The gain range is wide. With Preamp at 2.5 and Master at 10, the Sparkle Drive preset (treble 10, middle 6, bass 8, presence 2) runs clean-to-just-breaking-up, bright and open. Mild Crunch to Cranked (preamp 3, treble 7, middle 9, bass 5) shows how the tone stack responds at modest gain with the boost circuit adding another shove without getting congested. Cooking Stack (preamp 5, master 6, treble 9, middle 7, presence 8) digs into that chewy, brash territory where the Marshall character really shows up.
The footswitchable boost acts as an additional preamp tube stage. It can run before the main circuit to push it harder, and the Boost knob lets you dial it from subtle to assertive. Every preset in the demo includes the boost circuit, so you can flip it on and off to hear exactly what it adds.
Catalinbread’s SFT is the sibling amp-in-a-box on the site, and the contrast is instructive. The SFT is JFET-based and models an Ampeg: its Baxandall EQ is flat at noon, it has a lower-mid push, and its stones/stoner modes shift the gain ceiling. It leans into desert rock and heavy blues.
The DLS Deluxe chases Marshall territory instead: tone stack voiced to Plexi values, a discrete power amp sim, and the SB/SL toggle to pick between Super Lead and Super Bass head character. Where the SFT rewards noon-flat dialing and active sculpting, the DLS Deluxe is built around that cranked-Plexi feel. The Alexander Jubilee Silver Overdrive is the other Marshall-voiced option on the site if you want a second opinion on the same source material.
Classic rock, blues rock, and hard rock players after a cranked-Plexi in a box will find a lot to like here. The wide Preamp sweep means it covers everything from clean platform to full saturation, and the boost circuit makes it a two-in-one without a separate pedal. The line out for direct recording is a genuine bonus if you track at home.
If your goal is Vox, Fender, or Ampeg character, this is not the right tool; the SFT handles the Ampeg side of the catalog. For anyone chasing that brash, three-dimensional British gain, the DLS Deluxe is hard to beat.
