The MXR Sugar Drive is a Klon-style overdrive in the brand’s compact mini housing. Its character comes from three things working together: a mid push, a bass roll-off, and hard clipping diodes. The Drive knob is actually a clean/dirty blend, not a straight gain control, so turning it up layers saturated signal on top of your clean tone rather than replacing it.
My honest take on Klons and clones of Klons is that they all sound pretty much identical. Nobody will notice a difference in a mix. And they don’t inspire me as much as other overdrives to play. But listening back to the loop I recorded for this demo, the Sugar Drive does have a certain charm. The compression at medium drive has a nice chewiness to it.
The panel has three knobs. Tone sits at the top center; Level and Drive flank each other across the lower half, Level on the left and Drive on the right. Tone sweeps the brightness of the overdriven signal. Level sets output volume. Drive blends in the clipped signal from zero (clean boost territory) up to full saturation.
On the side of the pedal is a switch that toggles the buffer in bypass mode, which can be a useful option when you need to drive a long cable run or a high-impedance chain. In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for the Tone and Drive knobs, so you can hear what each one does in isolation. The three named presets, Light Gain (drive at 3, tone at 6), Medium Gain (drive at 6, tone at 5), and High Gain (drive at 9, tone at 3), map the range from sparkly push to compressed crunch.
The Light Gain preset shows the pedal’s strength as a transparent boost with just a hint of hair. Medium Gain is where that chewy compression starts to show up, and it’s the most Klon-characteristic zone. High Gain (drive at 9) rolls the Tone back to 3 to keep the brightness in check as the saturation stacks up. The voltage doubler inside gives the circuit more headroom than a standard 9V supply would normally allow, which is part of why the clean blend stays coherent even when the drive is cranked.
The MXR Timmy Overdrive sits in the same transparent-to-low-gain overdrive market and also comes in MXR’s mini format. The circuits are fundamentally different, though. The Sugar Drive is a buffered Klon-style design with a voltage doubler for extra headroom, a fixed mid push and a clean/dirt blend at its core. The Timmy is Paul Cochrane’s original circuit, with cut-only Bass and Treble controls (Bass pre-OD, Treble post-OD) and a three-way CLIP toggle for mild saturation, heavier compression, or a more open high-headroom feel. The Timmy’s EQ is more surgical: you can scoop or add low or high end without touching the midrange character. The Sugar Drive has more compression and a more fixed voice. If you want to shape your tone aggressively around the overdrive, the Timmy gives you more levers. If you want a straightforward Klon-style mid push with minimal setup, the Sugar Drive gets there faster.

If you’re into Klon tones but want them in a small, reliable package, this is a strong option. MXR’s build quality is solid and the mini format fits on any pedalboard. The buffer toggle is a practical bonus for players with complex boards. It also has a nice relationship with the front end of a clean amp: set the Drive low and it functions as a clean boost with a little mid emphasis; push it further for that compressed, chewy sound the Klon family is known for.
It won’t suit players who want a more malleable EQ or who find the Klon voicing too mid-focused. Those players should look at something like the Timmy. But for straightforward Klon-style drive in a rugged mini housing, it delivers exactly what it promises.
