The Kavun MOS Drive does overdrive with a distinctly Eastern European twist. A discrete MOSFET op-amp meets asymmetrical germanium and MOS clipping for a texture that’s both familiar and completely its own thing. This is a signature pedal for Ukrainian guitarist Denys “Topor” Toporchuk, evolved from Drunk Beaver’s earlier Kharkiv CMOStortion circuit but completely reimagined with better balance, more presence, and a three-band EQ that behaves like a proper amp stack rather than a tacked-on tone knob.
Controls
The top row holds the three-band EQ: Bass, Mid, and Treble running left to right. Below those sit Level on the left and Drive on the right. The EQ is passive and interactive in the same way a good tube amp’s tone stack is. Pull the Mid down and the Bass response shifts with it; push the Mid up and the whole character gets honkier and more forward. I’ve set up sweeps for Bass, Mid, Treble, and Drive in the demo above so you can hear exactly what each knob does on its own. There’s also a trimmer on the PCB for LED brightness, which is a small but appreciated touch.
How It Sounds
The Drive knob covers a lot of ground. At lower settings it’s a transparent, punchy boost with the clipping circuit barely biting. By the middle of the range there’s a grinding, harmonically complex overdrive that stays articulate through chord voicings. Maxed out it gets into saturated lead territory. The Cutting Drive preset (Drive at 7, Treble bumped to 7) captures that forward, present character. Warm Crunch (Drive at 4, Bass up, Treble pulled back) shifts the whole thing warmer and rounder. The QOTSA Thing preset pushes Drive to 10 and Mid to 10 with Treble at zero, which produces a thick, nasal wall of gain. Scooped Distortion scoops the Mid to 2 with Drive at 8 for a more modern, wide sound.
Roll back your guitar’s volume and the pedal cleans up noticeably. That responsiveness to pick attack is what makes single notes pop and chords stay defined even at the higher gain settings.
Kavun MOS Drive vs Dagger V2
The Electronic Audio Experiments Dagger V2 is a natural cross-shop. Both are op-amp based overdrives with real EQ sections that go well beyond a single tone knob. The Dagger uses an active EQ and can push into RAT-like distortion and Big Muff style fuzz territory, so its range is wider on the heavier end. The Kavun MOS Drive’s passive, interactive EQ and asymmetrical germanium-plus-MOS clipping give it a different texture: more harmonically nuanced at moderate gain, less of a chameleon at extreme settings. The Kavun also carries a specific character tied to its Ukrainian-built circuit and its Mostortion EQ lineage, which the Dagger doesn’t try to replicate. If you want maximum range in a single box, the Dagger covers more ground. If you want a pedal with a specific, distinct voice that rewards spending time with the EQ, the Kavun makes a strong case.
Who It’s For
This is a great main overdrive for players who want real EQ shaping rather than a single tone knob. It handles everything from edge-of-breakup rhythm work to saturated leads, and it stacks well with other dirt boxes. The interactive EQ makes it genuinely adaptable to different amps and playing styles. It’s not the right tool if you want a neutral, transparent boost with no coloration. And if your overdrive ideal is the warm, mid-forward simplicity of a Tube Screamer, the Kavun’s broader gain range and interactive EQ might feel like overkill. For everyone looking for an overdrive with its own voice that responds to how you play, this is worth serious attention.
