The XR EM-1 Echo Machine nails that classic digital delay character in a compact package that doesn’t compromise on sound quality. Drunk Beaver essentially took the mythical Ibanez EM-5 Echo Machine and gave it a modern makeover, adding the one thing the original was missing: a proper tone control.
The four knobs run in two rows. Up top, Tone sits on the left and Feedback on the right. Below them, D. Level is on the left and Delay on the right. It’s a clean, logical layout that’s easy to read at a glance.
Tone is a lowpass filter for the delayed signal. Clockwise gives you bright, pristine repeats that cut through a mix; roll it back for darker, more vintage-flavored echoes that sit further behind the dry signal. Feedback sets how many times the echo repeats before fading out. Delay controls the delay time, spanning 50ms all the way to 600ms: that range covers snappy slap-back at the low end and wide, spacious echoes at the top. D. Level controls the overall level of the delayed signal, from subtle ambient textures to obvious rhythmic echoes right up front.

I enjoy the EM-1 because it captures that crisp, musical digital delay sound without getting harsh or clinical. What impresses me most is how musical this pedal stays even with Feedback cranked up. The repeats build naturally without turning into an uncontrollable mess.
The four presets map the personality well. Rhythmic Tail uses a short Delay setting with Tone and Feedback both turned up high, giving you a tight, repeating echo that locks into a groove. Syncopations opens the Delay time while backing off the Feedback slightly, creating a looser, off-beat echo pattern. Dark Feedback pulls Tone all the way down and pushes Feedback to the max: the repeats pile up into a dark, droning wash that’s great for texture. Endless Spring sets a very short Delay time with Feedback near the top, producing a swirling, spring-like cascade.
The Walrus Audio Fundamental Delay is the natural cross-shop in the affordable digital delay category. The Fundamental Delay is the more versatile box: it offers three distinct algorithms (Digital, Analog emulation, and Reverse), tap tempo, and subdivision control in a single pedal. If you want a delay that covers multiple sounds and plays well with a tap-tempo workflow, it has the edge there.
The XR EM-1 takes a narrower but focused approach. It does one thing, clean digital delay, and adds a Tone control that lets you shape the tonal character of the repeats far more than a standard mix knob allows. There’s no mode-switching, no tap tempo, just four knobs and a straightforward digital engine. If what you’re after is specifically that classic 80s digital delay sound with some tonal shaping on top, the EM-1 is the more direct route.
It’s a strong fit for players who want that classic 80s digital delay character without a lot of menu-diving. The Tone knob extends the usable range considerably: darker settings push the repeats toward the vintage, bucket-brigade-adjacent side without actually needing BBD circuitry. It works well in simple rigs where you just need one reliable delay voice.
Players who need multiple delay types, tap tempo, or stereo output will need to look elsewhere. And since there’s no battery option, you’ll need a power supply on the board. But if you want a focused, well-built digital delay that does one voice really well, the XR EM-1 delivers.
