The Catalinbread Soft Focus Deluxe takes the Soft Focus reverb and turns it into a full shoegaze workstation. The original patch is based on a preset from the Yamaha FX500 rack unit, famously used by Slowdive on their 1993 record Souvlaki: a modulated plate reverb with sympathetic harmonies woven into the wet signal. The Deluxe keeps all of that and adds five more programs, an integrated delay, a footswitchable distortion circuit with series or parallel routing, and a multi-function jack for expression or tap tempo.
I really like the distortion circuit. It adds just the right kind of noise rock texture to the more ethereal side of this reverb, and being able to blend it in parallel means the shoegaze wash stays intact while the grit sits on top.
The top row of knobs reads left to right: Prgm, Mix, Mod, Verb, Dly, Time. Below and to the far left sits the Dst Lvl knob. The para/series toggle lives on the lower right.
Prgm is a rotary selector cycling through six positions. Mix sets the wet/dry blend. Mod controls the rate and depth of the chorus modulation. Verb sets the reverb decay length. Dly blends in the integrated delay signal. Time sets the delay time. Dst Lvl controls the level of the footswitchable distortion circuit. The para/series toggle routes the distortion either in parallel with or in series with the main reverb patch.
In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for Mod (on program 3), Verb (on program 2), Time (on program 1), and the para/series toggle (on program 1), so you can hear what each does in context.
The six programs map a real range of territory. Standard Soft Focus (program 1) is the original patch: lush, modulated, with the chorus shimmer hovering in the reverb. Long Reverb Tails (program 2) stretches the decay out for infinite-sounding washes. Deep Modulation Warble (program 3) dials the Mod up to 8.5 for a woozy, seasick wobble. Shimmer Soft Focus (program 4) layers pitch-shifted harmonics into the verb. Pitch Delay (program 5) shifts focus to the delay with Dly at 9 and Verb pulled back to 4, giving a more rhythmic, pitch-smeared echo. Lush Swell (program 6) turns everything up, with Mix at 9, Verb at 8.5 and Time at 10, built for building swell textures with an expression pedal.
The distortion keeps the noise rock connection alive. Running it in parallel is the more interesting mode for me because the clean shimmer isn’t buried, it becomes the bed the distortion sits in.
The original Soft Focus is a single-program pedal: one highly interactive reverb patch with Symph, Mix, Mod, Verb and Vol as your five controls. What it does, it does beautifully. The Deluxe is not just a “more knobs” version of that. It replaces the Symph and Vol controls with Dly and Time, adds Dst Lvl, gains a para/series toggle and a multi-function expression/tap jack, and opens up five additional programs on top of the original patch. The Deluxe also omits the VOL boost that the original uses as a clean boost when bypassed.
If you want one perfect shoegaze texture and simplicity, the original is the answer. If you want to stay in that sonic universe but cover more ground, use tap tempo, or add distortion without a separate pedal, the Deluxe is the step up. The programs that push furthest from the original, particularly Pitch Delay and Lush Swell, put the Deluxe in territory the base model simply can’t reach.
This is the pedal for players who are fully committed to the shoegaze aesthetic. Ambient, post-rock, dream pop, noise rock with a soft core: it covers the whole spectrum. The distortion circuit makes it a genuine two-in-one for anyone who wants fuzzy walls of sound without filling a second board slot. Expression pedal users get extra mileage from the swells programs.
The honest caveat: six programs and two footswitches make the panel busier than most reverbs. If you need one great hall or plate and nothing else, a simpler pedal will serve you better. But if you want to go all the way into Slowdive territory with room to explore beyond it, this is Catalinbread’s most complete statement on that sound.
