Most boost pedals make one promise and keep it. The Freqscene Effects Co. Fanclub makes four. It packs four completely different boost circuits into a single small box, switchable with a large rotary dial in the center of the pedal. That makes it one of the more versatile utility pedals I’ve come across: one slot on your board, four distinct tools.

Controls

There are two controls on the Fanclub. The big rotary in the center selects which of the four boost topologies is active. The small Volume knob below it sets your output level for whichever circuit you’ve dialed in.

Moving through the rotary, the four positions are Electra Overdrive, Treble Boost, Linear Boost, and Echoplex Preamp. In the demo above I’ve set up individual presets for all four circuits plus a sweep across the Type rotary so you can hear every position back to back.

How It Sounds

Each circuit has its own character and the differences are real, not subtle.

The Echoplex Preamp is the subtlest of the four. It doesn’t add much level on its own (the demo has the Volume at max for this one), but it thickens the midrange and adds a tape-like warmth. Jangly guitars that need a little more body without getting louder respond well to this. The Linear Boost is the transparent push: based on op-amp topology, it just makes everything louder and a bit more present without reshaping your tone. I reach for this live in front of an always-on drive or amp-in-a-box pedal, so rhythm parts and leads share the same voice but at different volumes. The Treble Boost is the aggressive one. It adds brightness and cuts through dense mixes, and it’s also the right choice for taming the low-end bloat you get from certain fuzzes. Stick it in front of a Big Muff and the result is focused and mean. The Electra Overdrive tips into dirty territory: fuzzy, a bit blown-out, the kind of thing that makes a clean amp sound like it’s running out of headroom on purpose.

Fanclub vs Lava Booster Mk2

The Lateral Phonics Lava Booster Mk2 is the natural cross-shop if you want a single-topology boost done really well. It’s a Class A MOSFET circuit that moves from transparent buffer to warm, tube-like overdrive with one knob, and it’s deeply responsive to how hard you pick. The Fanclub doesn’t have that single-control expressiveness. What it trades for is breadth: you get a preamp tone, a clean boost, a treble boost, and a dirty push all in one pedal. If you already know the flavor you need, the Lava Booster Mk2 lets you dial in that character with precision. If you’re still figuring it out, or you want one board slot to cover several different jobs, the Fanclub is the more practical pick.

Who It’s For

The Fanclub suits players who want flexibility without a sprawling board. It’s equally useful in the studio (quickly testing how different boost types affect the front end of an amp) and live (one preset for each circuit, all reachable with a single knob turn). The Echoplex and Linear modes are the workhorses for most people. The Treble Boost and Electra Overdrive are more specific tools, but having them available without an extra pedal is genuinely useful. If you want one boost and know exactly what you need, a dedicated single-circuit pedal might serve you better. If you want options, the Fanclub is hard to beat for the board space it occupies.
