The Freqscene Effects Co. Massiv models the preamp of an early 70s Hiwatt DR103, an amp known for stiffness and high headroom, and pairs that with a fully independent boost section you can run before or after the preamp. I have no personal Hiwatt experience, but from what friends and the internet tell me, Hiwatts resist breakup and stay punchy through the mids. The Massiv fits that description, and an internal output transformer adds just enough sag to keep things feeling alive rather than clinical.
The top row of knobs runs Bass, Middle, Treble, then Gain from left to right. All four are large bakelite-style knobs that feel substantial. Below them sit the Boost knob on the left and Volume on the right, flanking two small toggle switches in the center. The left toggle switches the boost character between clean and clipping modes. The right toggle sets the routing order: boost before preamp, or boost after. Two soft-touch relay footswitches at the bottom handle the main bypass on the right and the boost engage on the left, each with its own LED.

The Massiv earns its name by feeling bigger than most drive pedals. At moderate gain the preamp stays clean but weighty, with low-mid fullness you’d normally associate with an amp. Push the Gain toward the top of its range and it breaks up reluctantly, then all at once, with a grinding quality that stays tight.
The four presets map the range well. Punch (Gain at 7, Bass and Middle both at 6) is the working setting, a punchy clean-to-crunch voice that sits well in a band mix. Heavy (Gain at 10, Bass and Treble both at 8, Middle pulled back to 5) brings out a scooped, high-headroom wall of gain. Warm (Gain at 5, Treble all the way down, Bass at 9) rolls off the top end for a thicker, darker voice, and uses the clean boost toggle for a more transparent character. Scooped (Bass at 10, Middle at 1.5, Treble at 2, Gain at 8) pushes the low end hard with the mids pulled out, a very different character from the flatter Punch setting.
The boost routing toggle is where things open up. With the preamp first, the boost hits a saturated signal and adds level or clipping on top. Flip it and the boost drives the preamp input: harder attack, more compression at the front. The internal output transformer adds a subtle sag on note attacks, most noticeable on clean settings with the boost active.
The Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret Deluxe is the obvious cross-shop: both are British amp-in-a-box pedals with independent gain stages and a transformer-influenced feel. The DLS Deluxe chases Marshall, which means more midrange aggression and a chewy, brash saturation that breaks up more readily. The Massiv goes for Hiwatt territory, which is stiffer, cleaner at moderate settings, and more controlled when pushed. The DLS Deluxe has a single main gain channel; the Massiv gives you two footswitchable sections plus the routing toggle. If you want something that sounds cranked at bedroom volumes, the DLS Deluxe gets there faster. If you want high-headroom British character you can shape more deliberately, the Massiv is the one.
This suits players who want their overdrive to behave like an amp: stiff response, minimal compression, and a 3-band EQ that shapes without going extreme. It works as an always-on foundation, a stacking platform, or a two-footswitch clean-and-dirty rig. If you prefer smoother, more compressed overdrive with an easier path to saturation, a tube screamer-style pedal will get you there faster.
