The Coil by Freqscene Effects Co. delivers exactly the kind of lead sound I always try to build with a chain of individual pedals: lush reverb feeding into a drive circuit so the dirt chews on the wet signal and everything blooms into something much bigger than a single note. Freqscene rolled that whole signal path into one handmade box from Vancouver, and it works.
What I like most is how controlled the chaos feels. This is not a wall-of-noise pedal that just swallows your guitar. The Coil gives you musical, workable textures, and the interaction between the reverb feedback and the drive circuit is the heart of that.
The panel has five knobs. On the left column, Wet sets the reverb mix and Infinity (the large knob below it) blends the reverb output back into the input, building sustain and movement at moderate settings and tipping into self-oscillation when you push it toward max. On the right column, Bite controls the drive circuit from clean to full distortion or fuzz. Below it, two small knobs handle Freq (a master tone control running dark to bright) and Amp (master output volume). There is also a kill dry footswitch that cuts the direct signal entirely, leaving only the wet reverb path for true ambient washes.
In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for Wet, Bite, Infinity, and Freq so you can hear what each does independently. Amp is pegged at max throughout to keep the level consistent across presets.
The presets in the demo map the range well. Ambient Dirt has Wet, Bite, and Infinity all at 7, which gives you a washy reverb cloud with genuine drive pushing through it. That combination is where the pedal lives most naturally, shoegaze leads with body and sustain.
Beefy Slapback pulls Infinity all the way to zero and Freq down to 2, so the reverb decays fast and sits dark and thick underneath a moderately driven signal. It loses the bloom but gains punch.
Clangy Coil cranks Infinity to 8 and Freq to 10, keeping Bite low at 1. The high feedback builds long, shimmering tails and the bright Freq setting makes each note ring with an almost metallic edge before the next one layers on top.
Fuzzy Verb maxes Bite at 10 and pulls Infinity back to 2 for a more focused fuzz character, with the reverb as texture rather than the main event.
Kill Dry engages the kill dry footswitch with Wet at max, turning the Coil into a pure wet reverb unit. At that point it is essentially an ambient synth playing your guitar.
The OBNE Screen Violence is the natural comparison: another shoegaze pedal pairing reverb and fuzz in a single box aimed at dense, layered textures. The Screen Violence leans into the noise and decay side of things, with a more chaotic, less predictable interaction between its circuits. The Coil is more structured. The Infinity knob gives you deliberate control over how far into self-oscillation you go, and the Freq and Amp knobs keep the output usable rather than runaway. If you want unpredictable, atmospheric drone, the Screen Violence goes further. If you want workable shoegaze tones you can actually repeat and play in a band, the Coil is the easier tool.
This is for players who already know they want reverb before drive in their signal chain and want one pedal to do the whole job cleanly. It suits shoegaze, post-rock, ambient, and any style where held notes are supposed to evolve and breathe. The kill dry mode makes it genuinely useful for ambient loop work too. If your preference is tighter, more focused drive tones where the reverb comes after the dirt, the Coil will feel backwards to you. And if you need a standard delay or tremolo, it simply does not do that.
