The Slow Life is Freqscene Effects Co.’s take on the auto-swell pedal, built in small batches in Vancouver. Its direct ancestor is the Boss SG-1 Slow Gear, a long-discontinued classic that gets harder to find every year. Freqscene kept the core idea intact and then added two things the original never had: a dedicated Range control for longer swells, and a built-in diode compressor that makes the whole effect dramatically easier to play.
The panel runs two large knobs on the left and three smaller ones on the right. On the left, Attack sets how fast the volume fades in after you pick, and Compress controls the compressor depth. On the right, Sensi sets the detection sensitivity (how hard you need to pick before the swell triggers), Range controls the maximum swell length, and Volume sets the output level.
In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for Attack, Compress, and Range, so you can hear what each one does in isolation. There are also three full presets: Slow Swell runs everything wide open for the longest, most dramatic bow-like blooms; Quick Bloom pulls the Attack and Range back for a faster, more rhythmic swell that still breathes; and Just Compressor sets Attack to zero and Range to zero so the auto-swell circuit bypasses entirely and you’re just running the compressor clean.
The effect has the dreamy, bowlike quality you expect from this style of pedal. Because the attack transient is swallowed, single notes and chords bloom into focus rather than striking, which creates instant violin or cello textures. Slow Swell is the signature preset here: with everything at maximum, notes hang in the air and the compressor keeps even gentle picking consistent. Quick Bloom trades some of that drama for more playability in a band context, where a swell that never resolves can clutter the arrangement.
The compressor is genuinely useful, not just a checkbox feature. Recording the demo I found it essential for keeping soft fingerpicked passages even enough to trigger the swell reliably. The Sensi knob lets you tune how firmly you need to dig in, which matters most when swell times are long and inconsistent picking becomes audible.
The SG-1 is the obvious reference point because the Slow Life is openly inspired by it. The original Boss runs buffered bypass and tops out at swell lengths that many players find too short for ambient work. The Slow Life addresses both: true bypass via a silent relay switch, and the Range knob that stretches swell time well beyond what the SG-1 can do. The built-in compressor is the other differentiator; the SG-1 has none, which makes triggering it consistently more dependent on your picking attack. If you already own a functioning SG-1 and are happy with it, the Slow Life is an upgrade in features and repairability rather than a sound overhaul. If you don’t own one, the Slow Life is the easier modern path to this sound.
This pedal is for anyone chasing ambient, cinematic, or post-rock textures where the pick attack disappearing is the whole point. It works especially well in solo guitar settings and layered loops, where the reverb tail and the swell decay can be heard breathing together. With a short Attack and a modest Range it can also function as a rhythmic texture tool at slower tempos. If you want an auto-swell for straight lead playing at gigging volumes, the sensitivity tuning requires patience. And if your style relies on sharp pick attack defining the note, the swell circuit will fight you by design.
