The BFGRMWB stands for Big Fucking Green Russian Muff With Benefits. This handwired pedal out of Leipzig was tuned to a particular early V7D Bubble Font vintage Russian Big Muff: the unit known for its bold, powerful character. Then OKKO FX added three extra controls to make it practical in a modern rig. Plug in, stomp the switch, and it’s immediately clear why people keep coming back to the Russian Muff sound.
Controls
The panel splits into two columns. On the left are the two large knobs: Distortion at the top and Volume below it. On the right, four smaller knobs run from top to bottom: Tone, Mid Range, Rumble, and Presence.
Distortion and Volume do what you’d expect from a Muff: Distortion covers everything from light grit up to a wall of sustain, and Volume makes up any level lost in the clipping. Tone is the classic Muff tone stack, brightest counterclockwise and darkest clockwise, with the sweet spot depending on your pickup and amp.
The three extra knobs are where this pedal earns its subtitle. Mid Range adjusts how much midrange presence you get: back off for a deeper scoop, push it for more punch and cut. Rumble controls how much bass enters the circuit. Full open is the stock vintage setting, great for bass or a driven amp; rolled back it tightens up the low end for a high-headroom clean amp. Presence handles the top-end shimmer: back off for bright rigs, push it if you need definition to cut through a mix.

How It Sounds
Russian Muffs sit in a different part of the family tree than the NYC variants: more midrange presence, a rawer low end, and a quality that reads as more aggressive even at lower gain settings. The BFGRMWB captures that and then gives you knobs to push it further or pull it back.
The Russian Default preset puts the pedal in roughly stock vintage territory. Heavy Sizzle cranks Distortion and Presence for maximum fizz and grind. Extra Scoop drops Mid Range down and shows how much of a difference that control makes. Nice Drive rolls back Distortion with Rumble wide open for a driven-amp texture that stays on the fuzz side of overdrive. The preset cheekily named “The perfect Muff doesn’t exist” dials everything in together for the sustained, thick tone that made the original Bubble Font units famous.
BFGRMWB vs Big Muff PI
The EHX Big Muff PI is the natural cross-shop. The Muff gives you one classic sound: thick, smooth, and scooped. Adjust the tone knob to your rig and let it rip. The BFGRMWB starts from a Russian Bubble Font reference rather than a New York one, and adds six controls where the Muff has three, so you get more bass weight, more midrange presence, and more top-end control. It’s harder to find, released only in batches. If the iconic scooped sound and simplicity are what you want, the EHX is hard to argue with. If you want that rawer, fuller Russian character tuned precisely to your amp, the BFGRMWB gives you headroom the original never had.
Who It’s For
It’s a natural fit for anyone who’s loved Green Russian Big Muffs but found them hard to tame: too much bass flub through a clean amp, not enough definition to cut a mix, or the mid scoop sitting wrong in a band context. The extra controls solve all three without changing the core character. It works for guitar, bass, and baritone. If you want a smooth, scooped Muff with no extra shaping to manage, the NYC Big Muff is the simpler option. If the Russian sound is what you’re after and you want it dialed in, this is the pedal.
