The Capharnaüm is one of those fuzz pedals that refuses to be tamed: every note crackles with unpredictable energy and raw aggression that cuts through a mix like broken glass. RhPf Electronics built this one for punk and garage rock, for anyone looking for a fuzz that won’t clean up, and it delivers chaotic, spitting tones that range from St. Vincent-style gated mayhem to full-blown wall-of-noise destruction.
What makes this fuzz special is how erratic and alive it feels under your fingers. The sustain never quite behaves the way you’d expect, creating those beautiful moments of controlled chaos where notes suddenly gate off or explode into gnarly sag. It responds dramatically to pick attack and guitar volume changes, giving you everything from subtle texture to complete sonic annihilation depending on how hard you dig in.
Controls
Left to right on the panel, the three knobs are Wrath, Scorch, and Pillar. Wrath is the intensity control, taking you from a snarling grind at low settings to full-on, blown-out fuzz mayhem as you push it up. Scorch is the tone shaper, swinging between a dark, guttural low end and a sizzling, razor-sharp top. Pillar sets the output level, so you can balance the pedal’s presence against the rest of your rig. A single stomp switch handles true bypass, with a red LED marking when the circuit is active.
In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for Wrath and Scorch so you can hear each one working on its own against a fixed setting on the other two knobs.
How It Sounds
The four presets map out the territory well. Thick Glitch runs Wrath and Scorch both around the middle with Pillar pushed up, landing on a dense, unstable fuzz. Fuzz Smack keeps Wrath low but cranks Scorch, giving a brighter, spittier attack. Woolly Velcro maxes out Wrath with Scorch all the way down, which is where the gated, torn-paper velcro character comes through strongest. Fat Fuzz zeroes Wrath and dials in a bit of Scorch with Pillar maxed, showing there’s still a thick, guttural low end available even with the intensity backed off. Across all of them the sustain behaves erratically rather than smoothly, which is the whole point: this pedal wants to gate and spit rather than sing.
Capharnaüm vs Big Muff NYC
The Big Muff NYC is the reference for smooth, sustained fuzz: three knobs, one classic wall-of-sound voice that blooms and holds no matter how you dig in. The Capharnaüm is the opposite instinct. Its sustain is deliberately erratic, gating off and exploding into sag depending on pick attack and guitar volume, and it leans into spitting, torn-paper velcro tones the Muff was never built to make. If you want a fuzz that just sits there and roars evenly, the Muff still owns that lane. If you want a fuzz that behaves like it’s on the edge of breaking, the Capharnaüm is built for exactly that.
Who It’s For
This isn’t a polite fuzz that plays well with others: it’s designed for garage rock, punk, and any situation where you want your guitar to sound genuinely unhinged. RhPf Electronics builds it to work for both guitar and bass, and it stacks interestingly with other dirt pedals, adding that Swiss boutique unpredictability to whatever’s already cooking.
