Orange Dual Baby 100

The Dual Baby 100 asks a question the other Baby-series heads each answer only half of: what if you could have a clean JFET platform and four-stage British saturation in a single 7.9-pound head? Two fully independent channels, a balanced XLR out, and a buffered effects loop in a rack-mountable steel chassis.

Channel A runs from clean to dirty, staying crisp and focused whether you’re feeding it active pickups or a full pedalboard. Channel B roars to life with a gentle twist of its gain knob, delivering that familiar British aggression. The Class A/B power section stays punchy at any volume level.

Controls

Reading left to right across the top row, Channel A has Gain, Volume and Presence. Below that sit the Tubby switch then Bass, Middle and Treble. Channel B mirrors the same layout: Gain, Volume and Presence on top; Tight switch, then Bass, Middle and Treble below. A channel-select toggle and power switch sit on the right.

The Tubby switch on Channel A “adds girth and roundness to your tone, perfect for bluesy leads or vintage-flavoured rhythm work” according to Orange. The Tight switch on Channel B “tames bass boom and tightens response, ideal for aggressive riffing and modern guitar styles.” Both are worth hearing before you assume their EQ can handle the job alone.

In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for Gain A, Presence A, Bass A, Middle A, Treble A and the Tubby switch on Channel A, plus Gain B, Presence B, Bass B, Middle B, Treble B and the Tight switch on Channel B. That covers everything independently so you can hear what each control actually does.

How It Sounds

The presets map both channels across a wide range. Dual Gentle flips between them with Channel A at Gain 4 and Channel B at Gain 1: a clear picture of where each channel sits at lower gain. Double Chunk pushes both much harder, Channel A to Gain 8 and Channel B to Gain 9, which shows how far the saturation goes. The dedicated Tight sweep demonstrates how that switch reins in the low end on heavy riffs. Medium Chunk is a static Channel B snapshot at Gain 5 with the mids and treble nudged up, a sensible starting point for rhythm work.

Channel B also cleans up from the guitar volume knob, which makes it a reasonable single-channel amp for players who shape their sound that way.

Dual Baby vs Gain Baby and Tour Baby

The Gain Baby 100 has a VCA compressor on its clean channel, a four-stage high-gain dirty channel with a full three-band EQ plus Tight switch, and a footswitchable volume for rhythm-to-lead jumps. The Tour Baby 100 also has a compressor-equipped clean channel, but its dirty channel is a JFET design voiced for edge-of-breakup crunch rather than full saturation. The Dual Baby combines both voicings in a single head, but neither of its channels includes a compressor.

If your playing leans heavily on one voicing, a single-purpose head saves panel complexity and keeps the compressor. If you need a clean platform and a high-gain channel in the same gig without switching amps, the Dual Baby covers both.

Who It’s For

Touring and gigging players who want two genuinely different Orange voices in one compact head are the obvious fit. The XLR out handles direct feeds to the board, and the buffered loop keeps time-based pedals clean under heavy Channel B gain. It works equally well as a pedal platform on Channel A or a self-contained high-gain rig on Channel B.

Honest caveats: neither channel has a compressor the way the Gain Baby’s clean channel does. And if you want tube rectifier sag, you’re looking at the OR30 instead.
