The Orange Getaway Driver is an amp-in-a-box overdrive built around a Class A JFET circuit that runs internally at 18V for headroom. Three controls, two outputs, and one clear goal: capture the gritty, dynamic character of a cranked ’70s Orange amp without carting one to every gig.
The JFET design gives it the touch-sensitive response you’d expect from a valve stage. Dig in hard and it gets grittier; back off and it cleans up. At 9V the circuit leans into EL84-style breakup, and at 12V it opens up with more headroom and a grunt that the builder describes as EL34 character.
Controls

Gain does what it says: zero to full-on drive. Volume sets your output level independently of gain. Bite is the tone control, and it earns its name. Rolled back it’s warm and dark; pushed up it adds treble and presence, sharpening the attack. There’s also an internal mode switch that puts the pedal into preamp-only operation, useful if you want it to feed an amp’s effects return rather than its input. The second output carries a cab simulation based on Orange’s vintage G12H30 speakers, wired so bypassing the pedal on that output still passes the cab-sim signal, handy for headphone practice or recording direct.

How It Sounds
The three main presets map the range well. Warm Growl keeps Gain at 2 and Bite at 2: warm, dark, and relatively polite, but already unmistakably Orange. Medium Grit sits at Gain 5 and Bite 5, the balanced middle of the pedal where the breakup character really starts to show. Full Distortion cranks Gain to 10 with Bite at 6 for maximum saturation with enough top-end bite to cut through.
The two voltage presets show the 9V versus 12V difference directly. Both run the same knob positions (Gain 5, Bite 10), so the only variable is supply voltage. EL84 Breakup (9V) is the tighter, more compressed voice; EL34 Breakup (12V) opens up the low end and adds a little more sag.
Getaway Driver vs Terror Stamp
The Terror Stamp is the natural on-site comparison. Both chase cranked Orange tones with a cab-sim output. The Terror Stamp is a complete 20-watt hybrid amp: a real 12AX7 tube preamp into a solid-state power section, with a speaker output that drives a cabinet. The Getaway Driver has no power section; it goes in front of an amp or runs direct via cab sim. The Terror Stamp’s tube preamp delivers a different kind of sag and compression. The Getaway Driver is lighter, more pedalboard-friendly (9V or 12V, no mains connection), and stacks more naturally in a pedal chain. The Guitar Butler demo shows the Getaway Driver as a pedal-platform overdrive: Gain dialled back to 3, feeding the Butler’s clean channel with the EQ work done downstream.
Who It’s For
Classic rock, blues-rock, and stoner players looking for Orange color without the freight charges are the obvious audience. The cab-sim output makes it a practical recording and headphone tool. The two voltage options mean you can tune the feel to your rig. It works as an always-on color pedal into a clean amp, as a front-end overdrive stacked with other drives, or as a direct box into an interface.
The honest caveats: three knobs means limited EQ resolution, so players who want to carve frequencies precisely will find it coarse. The cab sim won’t replace a proper IR loader for critical recording work. And if you need the real-tube sag of an actual valve stage, the Terror Stamp is the more complete answer.
