Orange Gain Baby 100
The Gain Baby 100 nails that classic British amp tone in a compact, tour-friendly 100-watt head. This isn’t your typical lightweight class D affair. Orange went with a class A/B solid-state design, and it actually has some punch and personality to it.
What I enjoy about it is how it gives you two distinct channels that both feel like proper amps. The clean channel includes an integrated VCA compressor that adds just enough squish to make single notes sing, while the dirty channel delivers Orange’s characteristic crunch with a full three-band EQ, presence, and a tight switch for reining in low-end boom when you need focused attack on fast riffs.
Controls
The panel reads left to right, clean channel first. On the top row you get Compression and Volume for the clean side. The bottom row of the clean section holds Bass and Treble.
The dirty channel takes up the right half of the panel. Top row: Gain, Volume, FS Volume, and Presence. Bottom row: the Tight toggle, then Bass, Middle, and Treble. FS Volume is a footswitchable second output level, so you can jump from rhythm to lead without an extra pedal.
In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for Compression, Bass (clean), Treble (clean), Gain, Presence, Tight, Bass (dirty), Middle (dirty), and Treble (dirty), so you can hear what each control does without taking my word for it. The Gain Platform preset also sweeps between channels so you can compare the clean and dirty voices back to back, with a Freqscene Effects Co. Massiv running into the front end.
How It Sounds
The gain range on the dirty channel covers a lot of ground. Edgy Breakup keeps the Gain knob near zero but pushes the Volume to 3.5, getting that edge-of-breakup crunch the dirty channel does naturally. All at Noon puts everything at noon for a reference starting point. Chunky Gain drives the Gain up to 8 with Bass and Middle both elevated, which is where the Orange punch really shows up. On the clean side, Dry Clean stays crisp with low compression and a bright Treble setting, while Squeezed Funk cranks the Compression to 8 for a noticeably squishier feel.
The buffered effects loop stays clean even when you’re pushing the preamp hard, and that balanced XLR out means you can go straight to the board when needed. At just under eight pounds, it’s light enough for fly dates but substantial enough that it doesn’t feel like a toy.
Gain Baby 100 vs Tour Baby 100
The Tour Baby 100 is the closest sibling in the Baby series. Both are 100-watt Class A/B solid-state heads with the same two-channel layout: a compressor-equipped clean channel next to a dirty channel with three-band EQ, presence and the footswitchable volume. The real difference is the dirty channel’s voicing. The Tour Baby is tuned for classic Orange edge-of-breakup crunch, while the Gain Baby runs a four-stage high-gain circuit built for saturation with no pedals helping, plus the Tight switch to keep that extra gain controlled. If you want the amp to provide the dirt, the Gain Baby 100 is the one. If you live at crunch and below and stack pedals for more, the Tour Baby does that job well.
The Dual Baby 100 sits alongside both: it combines clean and British saturation channels in the same chassis and is worth a look if you want both voicings in one head.
Who It’s For
This amp works whether you’re running pedals into the front end or relying on the dirty channel for your gain. It’s loud enough for any stage and sounds good at bedroom volumes too, which you can’t always say about tube amps in this wattage range. The Tight switch makes it workable for modern rock and metal without getting flubby in the low end, and the compressor makes the clean channel genuinely pleasant for funk and single-note work. The honest caveat: there’s no reverb, and you’re getting solid-state dynamics rather than tube sag. Volume-knob players who want the amp to clean up from the guitar will find the dirty channel less interactive than a tube circuit.
