The EarthQuaker Devices Blumes is a rock-solid bass overdrive with enough sonic options to fit it into any recording situation. It’s the first pedal EQD ever built specifically for bass players, and the lineage shows: this is a modified version of the Plumes, their hot-rodded screamer, revoiced with double the gain and a deeper bass response to keep the low end intact where the guitar original thins out.
What I appreciate most is that EQD didn’t reach for the obvious solution. There’s no clean blend here. The Blumes is just voiced correctly for bass from the ground up, letting enough low end through while still pushing serious character into the signal, and the three-mode clipping toggle means you’re not locked into one flavor of grind.
The panel runs Level on the upper left, Gain on the upper right, and Tone in the center below them. The Mode toggle sits between Level and Gain at the top.
Level sets output volume, Gain controls drive amount, and Tone sweeps from darker bass-forward tones on the left to brighter treble emphasis on the right. The three-position Mode toggle is where the real character lives: position 1 is symmetrical LED clipping for the crunchiest, most compressed sound; position 2 removes the clipping diodes for a wide-open OpAmp boost; position 3 is asymmetrical silicon diode clipping, looser and warmer with a fuzzier edge.
In the demo I’ve set up sweeps for Mode, Tone, and Gain so you can hear what each one does across its full range.
The Blumes covers a lot of ground and the presets in the demo map its personality well. “Slight Bite” (mode 1, moderate gain) gives you a snappy, compressed grind that works well for picked playing where you want the notes to have some grit without going full-on distortion. “Warm Vibes” flips to mode 3 with the gain pushed further and the tone dialed back, and that combo gets you a thick, chewy drive with a loose, slightly fuzzy texture. “OpAmp Distortion” is mode 2 wide open, tone cranked bright, and that setting is genuinely aggressive for a bass overdrive, closer to a full distortion voice. “Full Bodied” dials the gain back in mode 1 with a darker tone, and that one just fattens the signal without calling attention to itself.
The low end retention is real. I’ve used this on tracks where I needed the bass to feel fuller and distorted at the same time, and the Blumes pulls it off without the frequencies fighting each other.
The Plumes is the obvious comparison because the Blumes is derived from it. Both share the same three-mode architecture and control layout. The difference is voicing: the Blumes has double the gain and a deliberately deeper bass response, so it doesn’t thin out the way the Plumes does when you run bass through it. If you already own a Plumes and want to press it into bass duty, you can make it work, but the low-end loss is audible. The Plumes has a slightly more aggressive top-end character in mode 2 that cuts better in dense guitar mixes, but on bass that extra treble edge is rarely useful.

Bass players who want a go-to overdrive that doesn’t need a clean blend to sound right will find a lot to like here. It works for rock, post-punk, funk and anywhere grind adds presence without swamping the low end. Mode 2 doubles as a clean boost when Gain is below noon, so there’s practical use outside pure drive tones. If you want extreme high-gain distortion for metal bass, look further up the gain spectrum. If a clean blend is non-negotiable, this one isn’t built for that.
