Orange O Tone 40

The Orange O Tone 40 nails that perfect pedal platform sweet spot in a surprisingly compact solid-state combo. Orange designed this one specifically as a clean amp that stays pristine until you crank it past 1 o’clock, which is already loud enough to get you fired from most gigs. It’s essentially a blank canvas: 40 watts of Class A/B power pushing a 12″ Voice of the World speaker, giving you serious headroom for whatever dirt boxes you want to throw at it.

What makes this thing special is how it balances Orange’s characteristic midrange clonk with a more scooped, Fender-like voicing. The onboard JFET tremolo is genuinely useful, not just a throwaway feature, delivering that bouncy, warm wobble you’d expect from a vintage amp. The digital reverb sounds convincingly springy without cluttering your signal, and both effects are footswitchable. The fully buffered effects loop means your time-based pedals stay pristine, while the headphone output includes a built-in cab sim for silent practice.

Controls

Reading the panel left to right: Reverb, Tremolo Depth, Tremolo Speed, Bass, Mids, Treble, Volume. The tremolo and reverb sit on the left as a dedicated effects block, then the 3-band EQ runs through the middle, with Volume on the far right. Both the tremolo and reverb have their own footswitches so you can toggle them independently without touching the knobs.

How It Sounds

I’ve been impressed by how this amp takes everything from subtle overdrives to massive fuzz without feeling compressed or losing low-end punch. The single-channel simplicity means you’re relying on pedals for gain, but that’s exactly the point: this is an amp that gets out of your way and lets your effects shine.

The Sweet Clean presets show the amp’s neutral foundation: Reverb at 3, Bass at 6, Mids at 4, Treble at 6. It’s a slightly scooped voice with just enough presence to sit in a mix. The With Drive presets pair the O Tone 40 with a Terror Stamp out front; the EQ shifts to Bass 7 and Mids 7 to compensate for the extra saturation. Chill Surf maxes the Reverb to 10 and dials Mids back to 2 with Treble at 9, turning the combo into a wash. Ambient Vibe brings the tremolo in at Depth 6 and Speed 3, with the reverb sitting at 7 for a slow, hypnotic pulse.

O Tone 40 vs Pedal Baby 100

The Pedal Baby 100 is the natural sibling to cross-shop. Both are Class A/B solid-state designs that stay clean and carry that same Orange-flavored authority. The difference is scope. The Pedal Baby is a pure power amp: 100 watts, a two-band EQ, two speaker outputs, and nothing else. No speaker, no tremolo, no reverb, no cab sim. It lives behind your preamp or modeler and expects you to bring everything else. The O Tone 40 is a complete combo with onboard speaker, footswitchable tremolo and reverb, and a cab-sim headphone output. The Pedal Baby makes sense if you already own a cabinet and want maximum signal-chain flexibility. The O Tone 40 makes sense if you want everything in one box.

Who It’s For

At 11.75 kg it’s lighter than most tube combos with comparable headroom, which makes it a real option for rehearsals and smaller gigs. Pedal-platform players, ambient players leaning on reverb and tremolo, and anyone who wants a quiet practice option via the cab-sim headphone output will find a lot to like here.

The honest caveat: there’s no onboard gain structure. The O Tone 40 is only as interesting as the pedals in front of it. If you need an amp that does some of the tonal heavy lifting on its own, look at a valve-driven Orange instead.
