Orange Tour Baby 100

The Tour Baby 100 nails that classic Orange clean and crunch tone in a surprisingly compact head. Under eight pounds and 1U rack-height, this solid-state amp delivers 100 watts that feels much bigger than its pizza-box size suggests.

What makes it special is a single-ended JFET preamp rather than traditional tube stages. The clean channel gets a studio-grade VCA compressor that adds punch and sustain without going squashy, while the dirty channel captures that Orange edge-of-breakup character with a footswitchable volume boost for solos. A buffered effects loop and a balanced XLR direct out you can run without a speaker load round out a very practical feature set.

Controls

The panel reads left to right in two groups. The clean channel sits on the left: Comp and Volume on the top row, Bass and Treble below them. The dirty channel takes up the middle: Gain, Volume, FS Volume, and Presence across the top, with Bass, Middle, and Treble underneath. A channel selector toggle and power switch sit on the far right.

FS Volume is the dirty channel’s footswitchable solo boost. Set it above the main dirty Volume and a stomp click jumps you to lead level without any extra boost pedal. In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for the Comp, Bass and Treble knobs on the clean channel, and Gain, Presence, Bass, Middle, and Treble on the dirty channel, so you can hear what each one does in isolation. There’s also a dedicated sweep that toggles between the two channels so you can compare them on the same riff.

How It Sounds

The clean channel is the Tour Baby’s calling card. With the Comp at noon and the Volume pushed, it stays crisp and articulate even with hot pickups feeding it. The Hi-Gain & Compressed preset takes the Comp all the way up and the Treble to 10 on the clean side, showing how much the compressor shapes the attack without killing the note. The dirty channel opens up the British crunch side: the Warm Gain preset keeps the Gain at 5 with the Presence at 4, sitting right at the edge of breakup rather than full saturation. Crank the Gain to 10, as in the Hi-Gain & Compressed sweep, and the dirty channel gets properly aggressive.

The FX Loop preset swaps in a reverb and an overdrive through the buffered loop, and the sweep shows how cleanly the loop handles pedals on both channels.

Tour Baby 100 vs Gain Baby 100

The Gain Baby 100 is the voicing sibling to compare. Both heads share the same compact solid-state format and a compressor-equipped clean channel, but their dirty channels are aimed at different players. The Tour Baby’s dirty channel is a JFET design tuned for classic edge-of-breakup crunch. The Gain Baby runs a four-stage high-gain circuit built to deliver British saturation without pedals helping. If you stack pedals into the front end and want a clean, punchy platform underneath, the Tour Baby is the better fit. If you want the amp itself to do the heavy lifting on gain, pick the Gain Baby. The Dual Baby 100 combines both voicings in one head if you want both characters in a single rig.

Who It’s For

Gigging players who need a reliable, lightweight Orange head with consistent tone night after night are the obvious audience. The clean channel and buffered loop make it a strong pedal platform, and I appreciate that the direct out works without a cabinet connected, which makes fly gigs and studio sessions much simpler. The dirty channel won’t replace a four-stage high-gain circuit for players chasing heavy tones, and you won’t get the exact sag and bloom of a tube amp. But if you want portable Orange character with the cleans and mid-gain crunch covered, it delivers.
