Way Huge Pork & Pickle

Read next What is the Best Bass Overdrive Pedal?

The Pork & Pickle by Way Huge is a bass overdrive and fuzz pedal with a clean blend, and the voicing and knob ranges on this surprisingly small box are extremely well tuned. I got an instantly gratifying tone the moment I plugged my bass into it.

Both the OD and the Fuzz side deliver a very robust, full-bodied bass tone with lovely saturation and sizzle, without losing low end, which is the balancing act most bass drive pedals struggle with.

Controls

Reading the panel top to bottom: a blue LED sits above Volume (left) and Drive (right). Below them is the OD/Fuzz toggle, switching the whole circuit between the Pork Loin overdrive and the Russian Pickle fuzz rather than blending the two. Tone sits centered underneath, shaping whichever drive circuit is active. The two smaller knobs at the bottom handle the parallel clean signal: Clean Blend brings in undriven low end to reinforce the fundamental, and Clean Tone shapes that clean signal on its own. The stomp switch at the bottom is true bypass.

In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for OD vs Fuzz, OD Gain Range and Fuzz Gain Range (both sweep Drive with the toggle in each position), plus Clean Blend, Clean Tone and Tone, so you can hear exactly what each control does.

How It Sounds

Meaty Crunch keeps the toggle on OD with Drive at a moderate 5 and a touch of Clean Blend, and it’s a thick, midrange-forward overdrive that stays articulate. Flip to Fuzz and Searing Fuzz pushes Drive to 8 with Clean Blend at 8 too, still a driven, sizzling tone rather than gated noise, since so much clean signal mixes back in underneath to hold the fundamental together.

Cleanish Drive goes the other way: OD mode, Drive at 0, Clean Blend and Clean Tone both maxed at 10, so the drive circuit barely contributes and you’re left with a bright, mostly clean bass tone. Synthy Fuzz sits at the opposite extreme: Fuzz mode, Drive and Tone both maxed, Clean Tone rolled back to 2, and that combination gets genuinely synth-like, compressed and buzzy in a way that flatters single-note lines more than full chords.

Pork & Pickle vs Blumes

The EarthQuaker Devices Blumes is the natural cross-shop, since it’s also built specifically for bass overdrive. The Blumes keeps low end intact with no clean blend at all, just a three-mode clipping toggle and a Tone control voiced for bass frequencies from the start. The Pork & Pickle solves the same problem differently: a dedicated Clean Blend and Clean Tone pair lets you decide how much undriven signal sits under the Pork Loin or Russian Pickle circuit. The Blumes also stops at overdrive, with no fuzz mode, while the Pork & Pickle’s toggle adds a genuinely different, dirtier circuit. If one drive voice already engineered for bass is enough, the Blumes is the simpler tool. If you want overdrive and fuzz together with independent clean-signal shaping, the Pork & Pickle covers more ground.

Who It’s For

Bass players who want overdrive and fuzz in one pedal, with a real way to keep low end intact at high gain, are the target audience. It works for a gnarly midrange crunch on rock or stoner bass, or something more synth-like when you push the Fuzz side and roll off Clean Tone. The clean blend means you can run Drive hard without your low end disappearing live or in a mix.

If all you need is one flavor of grind, a single-circuit pedal like the Blumes is simpler to dial in fast. But if you want overdrive and fuzz on tap with independent shaping of the clean signal underneath, the Pork & Pickle earns its footprint.
