The Orange AD200 is one of those bass amps that just gets it right from the start. With four KT88 tubes pushing 200 watts through the shortest possible all-analogue signal path, it delivers deep, punchy Orange bass tone without any unnecessary bells and whistles.
What I love about the AD200 is how responsive it feels under your fingers. The all-valve design reacts to how hard you hit the strings. Dig in and you get natural compression and harmonic saturation; play softly and it cleans up with surprising clarity. Orange describes the character as “thick lows, growling mids, and smooth roll-off in the highs,” and that’s exactly what you hear.
Reading the panel left to right: Volume, Treble, Mids, Bass, Clean Switch, Gain. Volume sets output level; the three-band EQ sits in the middle; the Clean switch adds headroom and tightens the low end, which matters with active basses that can easily overload the input stage; Gain on the far right governs how hard you push the preamp valves. Both active and passive inputs are properly voiced. The slave output is handy for recording or running additional cabinets.
In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for Treble, Mids, Bass, Clean Switch, Clean Gain (with Clean Switch on), and Dirty Gain (with Clean Switch off), so you can hear each control’s range on the same riff.
The three non-sweep presets map the amp’s range well. Smooth Clean keeps the gain low at 3 with the Clean Switch on and volume pushed to 8, showing how much clean headroom the KT88s have on tap. Vintage Tube sits in the middle with the gain at 6 and the Clean Switch off, where the amp starts to breathe and add natural valve compression. Hard Rock cranks the gain to 8 with the Clean Switch off, mids at 7, and treble at 8 for an aggressive, cutting tone that still has plenty of low-end weight underneath.
Edgy Punch is the clearest illustration of what the Clean Switch actually does: gain is at 7 but the Clean Switch is on, so the front end stays controlled even at that level. Flip the Clean Gain and Dirty Gain sweeps back to back and you hear the same gain range behave quite differently depending on whether the Clean Switch is engaged.
The natural sibling to cross-shop is the Terror Bass. The Terror Bass pairs a proper ECC83/12AT7 valve preamp with a Class D power section, delivering Orange tube warmth in a portable format at around 10 pounds. The AD200 is all-valve throughout: two ECC83s and an ECC81 in the preamp feeding four KT88 power tubes, 26 kg, and a head-cabinet commitment. Both share the three-band EQ and the Clean Switch. The power section is where they diverge: four KT88s at 200 watts all-valve have a density and sag that Class D handles differently. If portability matters, the Terror Bass is the honest answer. If you want the full all-valve experience for larger stages, the AD200 is the one.
This amp works for bass players across a wide range of styles. The clean end covers jazz and fingerstyle work with round, warm tone; the gain range handles rock and heavier styles with genuine drive rather than fizz. The simplicity is a feature: five controls and two inputs, and that’s it. The honest caveats are the weight (26 kg is not a grab-and-go situation) and the lack of a built-in DI or effects loop, which means you’re running external solutions for those. Volume-knob players get the most from it, because the single channel responds well to changes in picking attack and bass volume.
If you want Orange’s all-valve bass tone without compromise, the AD200 delivers it. Just plan for the load-in.
