The Bondi Effects Del Mar MkII is one of those rare low gain overdrives that actually earns the “deluxe” label. Rather than cloning a single classic circuit, Bondi’s designer pulled from BluesBreaker, Klon, and Tube Screamer DNA and came out the other side with something that doesn’t sound exactly like any of them. It runs internally at 24 volts from a standard 9V supply, which gives it that open, amp-like headroom that low gain drives live or die by.
Like the Sick As, it works just as well on bass as on guitar.
The panel reads top to bottom: Bass and Treble across the top row, the headroom toggle in the center, then Drive and Output below it.
Bass and Treble are an active Baxandall EQ with up to 15 dB of boost or cut each. That’s a genuine two-band EQ, not a passive treble bleed. It means you can add bass without muddying the low-mids, or dial back brightness without losing body. In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for Bass and Treble so you can hear the full range of each one.
The headroom toggle is the personality switch. Up puts the circuit in a lower headroom, more compressed voicing with a squishy BluesBreaker feel. Down opens it up: less compression, more bass, and a sharper, more focused Klon-like cut. I’ve included a Headroom Toggle sweep so you can hear both modes back to back at the same Drive setting.
Drive and Output round out the panel. Because the internal voltage is boosted to 24V, the Drive control has genuine range before it chokes up. I’ve set up separate Drive sweeps for low headroom and high headroom modes so you can hear how the gain character differs between them.
The three static presets map the circuit’s range well. Rich Texture uses the low headroom mode with Drive up at 7, and you get a warm, harmonically dense overdrive with real body. Present Drive flips to high headroom mode and dials Drive back to 5, getting that forward, cutting tone that sits well in a band context without fighting the amp. Edge of Breakup keeps the high headroom mode but rolls Drive all the way down to 3 for a clean boost that just barely kisses the circuit’s gain stage.
Across all of it, the Baxandall EQ is what makes the Del Mar genuinely flexible. Most drives force you to EQ around them. This one EQs to your rig.
The JHS Morning Glory V4 is the most obvious BluesBreaker-style comparison that has a demo on this site. Both are low gain drives, but they feel quite different in practice. The Morning Glory has a pronounced mid hump and a sharp bass cut that makes it very cutting and easy to hear in a mix. It’s a focused tool.
The Del Mar’s Baxandall EQ lets you dial bass and treble independently, so you can keep the low end without sacrificing presence. The headroom toggle also gives you two distinct voices where the Morning Glory stays in one lane. If you want something focused and cutting without much fuss, the Morning Glory delivers. If you want more range to adapt to different amps and guitars, the Del Mar has it.
This pedal is for players who want a low gain overdrive that responds naturally, adapts to the amp, and doesn’t impose a strong character of its own. It fits clean or lightly breakup amp situations equally well. The two headroom voices and the active EQ make it work across single coils and humbuckers, guitar and bass.
If you want a pedal with a strong, distinctive voice that announces itself, this probably isn’t it. The Del Mar works best when you notice the guitar and amp more than the pedal.
