Interstellar Audio Machines Octonaut Hyperdrive

Jan 6, 2023

The Octonaut Hyperdrive by Interstellar Audio Machines is a cool drive pedal for that transparent but focused sound to push your amp into sweet, creamy gain. This is a Klon-style overdrive, straight forward with just the 3 essential knobs and zero clutter on the user interface. Plus, look at that ultra-cool design. If you want that classic Klon-tone with premium build quality and killer looks on your pedalboard, get the Octonaut Hyperdrive.

Controls

The panel keeps things simple: Volume and Drive sit up top, with Tone centered below them. Interstellar Audio Machines builds the drive circuit around a dual-ganged gain control, which is the kind of detail that keeps the taper smooth and predictable as you turn it, rather than jumping in feel from one end to the other. In the demo above I’ve set up sweeps for both the Drive and Tone knobs, so you can hear exactly how each one shapes the sound as you turn it, with the other two knobs held steady.

How It Sounds

The three main presets map out the gain range. Low Gain keeps Drive down at 2 with Tone at 5, which is where the pedal sits closest to a clean boost, adding thickness to the amp’s own breakup rather than layering on its own distortion. Mid Gain pushes Drive to 7 and pulls Tone back to 4, moving into the creamy, focused overdrive this circuit is built for. High Gain maxes Drive at 10 with Tone dialed down to 2 and Volume backed off slightly to 4, which is as aggressive as the Hyperdrive gets while still staying in low-gain overdrive territory rather than crossing into distortion. Across the range the voice stays transparent and focused, pushing the amp’s own character forward instead of covering it up, which is the whole point of a Klon-style circuit.

Octonaut Hyperdrive vs Morning Glory V4

The JHS Morning Glory V4 is a good point of comparison because it’s also billed as a transparent overdrive, but the two circuits get there differently. The Morning Glory is Bluesbreaker-derived, with a noticeable mid hump and a real bass cut baked in, so it carves out its own shaped voice even at low gain. The Octonaut Hyperdrive follows the Klon lineage more directly, aiming for a genuinely neutral push that widens and thickens whatever your amp is already doing rather than adding its own frequency signature. If you want an overdrive that has an opinion about the mids, the Morning Glory is the one. If you want something closer to invisible gain that still lets the germanium diodes add a bit of harmonic character underneath, the Hyperdrive is the better fit.

Who It’s For

This is a pedal for players who already like their amp’s clean or edge-of-breakup tone and just want more of it, rather than a new flavor stacked on top. It works as an always-on gain boost for blues, classic rock, or country rigs, or as a lead push in front of an already dirty amp. If you’re chasing high-gain distortion or want a pedal with a lot of tonal personality of its own, the Hyperdrive’s low-gain, transparent design isn’t going to get you there. For anyone building a pedalboard around a great-sounding amp who just needs a smart way to push it harder, this fits right in.
